Chalk

Bill Thomson

It’s amazing what can happen when you draw. In this case, three children head to the playground on a rainy day and discover a bag of chalks hanging on the mouth of a sit-and-ride dinosaur.

First they draw a sun – and the sun comes out. Next they draw some giant butterflies – and they fly off the ground. Then they draw a fiercesome dinosaur – and the trouble really starts. Fortunately the resourceful children use the chalks once more to make their escape.

The hyper-real illustrations of this book look almost photographic, but were actually created by hand with acrylic paint and coloured pencils. This book shares a similar theme to Aaron Becker’s Journey, that of the magic pencil, but is realised in a completely different way.
